The hikes are scheduled for mornings because summer storms generally happen in the afternoon.
Hiking is completely optional, although interesting discussions usually occur during the hikes.

1:00pm: Introduction and Session 1
Evening: Groups go to dinner or informal "bring & cook-your-own" barbeque + discussion
- Day Two, 9:00 am: Meet at Camp4 Coffee for hike along river, waterfall, through woods (slightly more uphill than yesterday, still fairly easy).
1:00pm: Session 2
Evening: Groups go to dinner or informal "bring & cook-your-own" barbeque + discussion
- Day Three, 8:30 am: Meet at Camp4 Coffee for hike (TBD).

Location and Lodging
Crested Butte is a small resort town located at about 9000
feet, near the continental divide. It is known for its
skiing in the winter and hiking and mountain biking in the
summer.
We hold the event in town, and free buses run up to the
ski mountain every 15 minutes.
I recommend that you look at the
details about lodging and how to get to
Crested Butte above before making a reservation, but if
you're in a hurry you can just call the Crested Butte
Chamber of Commerce at (800) 545-4505 and they will help you
make a reservation. Remember to ask for a reservation in
the town of Crested Butte, and not on the mountain, in
order to be close to the conference location. However, in the Summer there
are always more rooms available on the mountain than in
town, and the bus is very convenient to get from the
mountain to town.
If you're on a budget, try the hostel or ask the Chamber of Commerce about camping.
Airline tips:
- Frontier Airlines is
a discount airline with its home in Denver, so you'll find the most
flights (almost always nonstop) from anywhere to Denver via
Frontier. Because it's a discount airline it doesn't show up on the
airline search sites; you have to go to the Frontier site directly.
- From Europe,
British Airways has
a nonstop from Heathrow to Denver. Lufthansa has direct
flights between Denver and Frankfurt, and Denver and Munich.
- The cost of the flight from Denver to Gunnison can vary
dramatically depending on the season and other factors. In the winter
there is typically one 757 per day from both Denver and Dallas (as
well as smaller planes during other times of the day), which tends to
be a more reliable flight. Once you register, you can post to this
event's newsgroup to form carpools to drive up from Denver rather than
flying, if you choose (this is a good choice in the summertime, and
the drive is quite beautiful).
- If you fly into Gunnison, you don't need to rent a car (the town of
Crested Butte is small and walkable). For the shuttle from Gunnison to Crested
Butte, you can make reservations directly on the
Alpine Express Shuttle website.
- Here are three sites recommended by Fast Company magazine to help get better
deals:
- Farecast
- FareCompare
- Yapta.
High-speed Internet is available in the conference location and at
several locations within easy walking distance of the conference
location. Many lodgings provide Internet access but you should ask to
make sure.
Often people stay the day after the conference or for the weekend;
informal gatherings have been known to happen.
You will be added to a newsgroup when you register. There you can:
- Ask questions about the event
- Start pre-conference conversations
- Share rides and housing
